Gorgeous Looking Water Physics Platformer ‘Walter’, Emerges From Former Test-Drive Unlimited Dev Blossom Minds – Debut Trailer Released

leave a comment »

Blossom Minds, an off-shoot of Test Drive Unlimited developer Eden Games has today released the trailer for it’s inaugral effort – a water physics platformer that goes by the pun-tastic name of ‘Walter’.

Besides boasting a charming art-style and looking utterly gorgeous, Walter looks like on initial impression at least that it will play as well as it looks.  Playing as a sentient blob of water with eyes, the titular ‘Walter’ can change his mass, form and density to suit any situation.  See a long series of peaks and trough tubing that needs to be overcome? Walter can transform himself into a trickle of water to speedily race up and down the tubes far quicker than if he was to remain as a blob of water; otherwise forced to slowly plod through.  Another great example of how denisty and form affect the gameplay is one instance in the trailer where Walter is required to maintain a frozen ice-cube state to complete the level and he does this by keeping under dynamically moving shadows in order to prevent himself from melting.

It really looks like compelling stuff and while no formats have been announced, smart money is on an XBLA, PSN and Steam release sometime during the vague ‘2013’ release window that has been pegged for the game.

The trailer for ‘Walter’ is embedded below:

Walter is due to be released on formats to be announced sometime in 2013.

EA/DICE Confirms Double XP Weekend For Battlefield 3 This Weekend – Get A Better Return On Your Fragging

leave a comment »

EA has today announced that another ‘Double XP’ weekend is in the works for Battlefield 3 with the next lot of double XP grabbing festivities kicking off June 16 at 8.01am BST. For the uninitated or the painfully slow, this basically means that you’ll receive double the usual amount of XP across all matches on all maps when playing only on ranked servers. The double XP goodness ends June 18th at 7.49am BST and the promotion applies to the game on all formats; 360, PC and PS3.

Just what I need to get to rank 45 then – getting piss sick of seeing everybody else killing me and passively taunting me with their shiny, numbered emblems. The twats.

As an additional note, PC and 360 owners who decided to plonk some of the Queen’s down for Battlefield Premium will find that the Close Quarters expansion is available for download today; PS3 folk got knee deep in that shizz last week.

Mark Of The Ninja E3 2012 Trailer Gleefully Reminds Us How Stealth Should Be

leave a comment »

Whilst Sam Fisher was out and about doing Michael Bay golden showers over the legacy of stealth that he had built at this year’s E3, it was perhaps rather fitting that ‘Mark of the Ninja’, an Xbox Live Arcade title by Shank developers Klei Entertainment, was delighting the rest of us from the shadows with it’s stealthy 2D platform exploits – reminding us just how fun stealth can be and what it takes to get it *right*.

The game reinvigorates all of the hallmarks of stealthy gameplay, focusing sternly on the setup for the kill (or evasion instead of the kill) with misdirection, patient observation and wide-range of acrobatic abilities and ninja gadgets all further emboldened by Klei Entertainment’s typically gorgeous cartoon stylings.

Below, you can see not only the E3 2012 trailer, but also an earlier video taken from PAX East – showing off one of the levels in almost it’s entirety.

It’s about time games took stealth seriously again says I:

Mark of the Ninja is due to be released exclusively on XBLA sometime this Summer.

Brand New HD Footage Of PS3 Exclusive Beyond: Two Souls Manifests Itself And Sears The Eyeballs

leave a comment »

In continuing to have dirty, dirty sex with your eyeballs, the newest footage of Quantic Dream’s next title Beyond: Two Souls, does little to dissuade that it’ll be one of the standout first-party exclusives when it finally lands sometime in 2013 on Sony’s aging PS3.

Sadly, just like the E3 reveal, any sort of gameplay is non-existent here; with the focus being doggedly set on showcasing the amazing visuals and real-time cutscenes.

Satisfy your retinal sexual cravings below:

Beyond: Two Souls is due for release sometime in 2013 for the PS3.

Disney’s Wreck It Ralph! Crosses Over Gaming Pop Culture Icons Such As Street Fighter, Sonic & Mario In An Animated Movie That Screams ‘I Am Awesome’

leave a comment »

Wreck It Ralph! tells the story of ‘Ralph’ an 8-bit arcade videogame bad-guy sick of his predicament of being owned and beaten day in and day out.  So when when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun, Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness.  Naturally things don’t go quite right as you can imagine and everything goes down the pan pretty quickly.  One of the best things about this movie is that it is packed to the brim with references to some of gaming’s most enduring pop-culture villains such as the ghosts from PacMan, Zangief from Street Fighter, Kano from Mortal Kombat and Bowser from Mario.

Let that sink in for a second.

Disney are making an animated movie with Bowser in it.

It can’t fucking fail and looks utterly, utterly brilliant.

Have a look at the trailer and see if you agree and if you don’t, well, you’re beyond help really:

Disney’s Wreck It Ralph is due to be released in the cinemas this November in both 2D and 3D formats

E3 2012 – Square-Enix Unleashes Their Next-Gen ‘Luminous’ Engine On Us Ordinary Folk

leave a comment »

With Epic Games firing the opening salvo in the next-generation war on visuals, it had seemed like it would only be a matter of time until one of the regulars Crytek/id Software/DICE would start firing back; showing us all what to expect from their graphical middleware in the next-generation of consoles and PC hardware.

No, instead it was Final Fantasy developers Square-Enix who responded to the call – showing off their next-gen ready ‘Luminous’ engine; a piece of technical wizardary that truly aims to bridge the gap between in-game and pre-rendered visuals.  Despite the crazy amount of graphical complexity here, the engine is seemingly hugely scalable; able to run on everything from low-powered mobile devices, all the way up to the next-generation of consoles.

Have a peek at the tech demo below and see what you think.

I think it looks amazing, quite frankly:

The Luminious Engine will be the graphics technology that will power the majority of Square-Enix’s titles for next-generation consoles and PC.  Expect to see and hear more soon.

E3 2012 – Nintendo Press Conference: Open-World WiiU Lego Title ‘Lego City’ Gets Trailered

with one comment

One relatively pleasant little surprise at the Nintendo WiiU software presser, was the first real trailer for Lego City, an open-world, third-person crime-busting title set in the Lego Universe.

Combining the usual charming Lego aesthetic and innovative use of the WiiU tablet (in one example, your objectives are transmitted to you through the tablet), Lego Universe was a breath of fresh air of sorts.  The game itself looked like some sort of crazy crossover between the Lego Star Wars/Batman/etc. titles and an open world sandbox game such as GTA.

Have a look at the trailer below and see what you think for yourself:

Lego City is due to release exclusively on WiiU at a date to be announced.
